A captain aboard his ship has a gift for his wife at home: a duck egg. After a storm washes the egg overboard, it hatches. The duckling swims to the captain's likewise-adrift fiddle, leading to a roundabout rescue. This wondrous ode to the interconnectivity of it all boasts commanding mixed-media illustrations with weather-churning heavy brushstrokes of acrylic paint.

Hamilton is "the rippingest, roaringest Squidlegger in the scrintalberry swamp," but his kryptonite is bedtime, when he fears the bracklesneed will strike. Hamilton's father's attempt to bribe him with a double-decker grasshopper worm cake succeeds following a nighttime (or dreamtime? It's rather confusing) multivillain romp in which Hamilton, who resembles a Muppet guppy, cavorts in Ering's fantastically fantastical acrylics.

For wiggleskins--mild, gray, clamlike sea creatures--life is mainly lived "necks in." After a "hornly scratcher" (a human keen to eat them) attacks, young Edwin must save the group. The heavily worked-over acrylic and ink illustrations in oceanic and earthy hues show the degree of Ering's dedication to bringing the wiggleskin world to life; his text is entertaining but not quite as inspired.

In drab Cementland, a boy searches for treasure and finds a box filled with seed packets. After thieves steal some of the seeds, the boy builds a scrap-heap monster named Frog Belly Rat Bone to protect his treasure. Cementland's Edenic transformation is a predictable end to a rambling story line, but the scrawled, hand-lettered text and scraggly illustrations suit the otherwise offbeat story.
